Kone Sushi goes Downtown

Miami Beach’s Kone Sushi opened a second location in Downtown Miami and now fans of fusion eatery can enjoy the unique Japanese and Brazilian cuisine without having to take a trip over the McCarthur Causeway.   A favorite amongst South Beach locals, founders The Medeiros and partners decided to take on the foodie scene in Downtown Miami bringing with them their unique flavors and sushi combinations with them.

Tucked away on SE 247th and 1st St, Kone sushi is a great place to dine for lunch or dinner and enjoy cocktails with friends. On the weekends, bring the entire family and enjoy the scenery while enjoying a selection of Japanese and Brazilian inspired dishes like their signature “Chef’s Favorite” the Tsunami roll, which includes soft shell crab tempura, Alaska King crab with garlic and cilantro sauce, asparagus, topped with shrimp, and a hint of lime.

In addition to their already popular dishes, Kone offers a weekly special such as this weeks Tai Spice Tuna Roll – Yellowtail, Jalapeño and Avocado inside topped with Spice Tuna, Scallion and Sesame oil rolled in a Chili Soy Paper.

As a fan of the South Beach location, I decided to head over to Kone and see if the new location holds up to the original- and yes, yes it did!  I started off with an array of appetizers that included the Carpaccio (my fave!) comprised of thin slices of salmon, yellow-tail or tuna topped with sea salt and drizzled with the house sauce and truffle oil, the Ceviche made of yellow-tail, octopus & shrimp, red onions and cilantro marinated in fresh squeezed lime juice and a hint of siracha, and the Rock Shrimp battered in a light tempura mixed with house spicy sauce, topped with massago and scallions.

The ceviche was made perfectly with just the right amount of lime and a hint of spice and the octopus had a nice bite but was still delicate.  As someone who doesn’t really like spicy food, the Rock Shrimp for me were delicious.  The spice level was enough to give you a nice little kick, but not so strong you needed to have a glass of milk with every bite.

After the appetizers it was time to indulge in a few rolls. My favorites included the Shaggy’s Dog (shrimp tempura & avocado layered with kani, scallions and spicy mayo), the Magma (salmon, chili sauce  & chili powder, scallions, topped with tuna & spicy mayo), finished off with the Crunchy Monster (spicy tuna, avocado, topped with crunchy tempura, spicy mayo & eel sauce). I had a feast.

And of course no meal would be complete without dessert.  My suggestion- the Nutella Pie.  Yes, let me repeat, a NUTELLA PIE! After that my night was complete, aside from the bulldozer needed to roll me out of there.

When in downtown, make sure to try them out and take advantage of their all-you-can-eat sushi dinner for only $28.95 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m Monday through Thursday.  Ladies enjoy the same amazing all-you-can-eat sushi special on Tuesdays for only $20.

From their wide array of sake (they have 10 different types) to their unique take on Japanese and Brazilian cuisine, Kone Sushi certainly maintains the same freshness and quality food that you’d expect from their SoBe location in their new home in downtown.  Next time you’re in the mood for sushi, head to downtown and experience the fusion.
