Thomas Gold Keeps On Shining

Since stepping onto the scene in 2006, Thomas Gold has skyrocketed his way to stardom.  An international superstar, the German DJ has taken the dance music scene by storm.  From his first releases on labels such as Toolroom Records, Phazing, Spinnin’ Records and Size Records and teaming up with some of the biggest names in the industry like Dirty South, Alex Kenji and Fatboy Slim to name just a few, he has made his mark and is here to stay.

By 2012 he signed to Axtone Recordings, the British Record label founded by Axwell from Swedish House Mafia, and from then on there was no stopping him.  He released back-to-back hits with tracks like “Sing2Me” which went to the Number 1 spot on Beatport charts, followed-up with the melodic track “Remember” which featuring vocals from platinum-selling Aussie Kaelyn Behr.  This was the single that sparked his “Remember the Light” tour that continues to sell out around the world.

Although he wasn’t ranked in the top 100 DJs by DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll for 2013, Gold has been taking over the main stage at some of the biggest music festivals around from Ultra Music Festival and Electric Daisy Carnival to Coachella and Tomorrowland.  His high-energy and on the spot edits that keep the crowds hype have earned him a residency at Light Las Vegas and he’s a regular in some of the hottest clubs in Miami such as LIV and Story.

I caught up with him recently to pick his brain over a quick Q & A and here’s what he had to say.

Tell us about the concept and inspiration behind the “Remember the Light Tour”
Actually the tour is based around my track ‘Remember’. It tells the story about a couple spending the night together and how they watch the sun rising up. They will always remember this moment, as it’s so special. So it’s about memories and partying until the light the next day – everyone has his own club experience and Light also stands for something positive to remember. Always remember the light – the positive things!

What is your favorite track off this tour?
I would say it is ‘Remember’ as I started playing this track right upon the start of the tour, I play it at each of my shows and I’m super excited to see people singing along with it already!

What was your first record you bought?
Hmmmm, I know it was actually a house record and actual vinyl but not sure which it was!

Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails?’
There are plenty of them in my bag, but just to pick two of them, it would be my remix of Adrian Lux’s ‘Teenage Crime’ and maybe ‘You’ve Got The Love’ from Florence and The Machine

What’s your favorite tune of all time?
I couldn’t pick THE one…so much good stuff!

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
I just sit down with my people and I have a beer!

How is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
Very exciting, as people are getting so much into it and it is great to see the scene growing even bigger! There are so many amazing clubs out there and all those huge festivals – it’s pure fun to travel and to play! I love it!

Where is your favorite place to party?
I’d say New York City, Miami and LA – and of course Berlin!

How big is your vinyl collection? What do you think of CDJ’s?
I have a few vinyls but I work with USB harddrives and CDJ’s. SO I love CDJ’s, they give me the technical possibilities I need for my set, they are super reliable and you can still focus on the crowd while working with them.

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
This guy trying to crowd surf from the stage in front of me – but when he jumped into the crowd the people backed all off so he fell on the ground…sounds scary but he assured me afterwards that he did not get injured. But that was a laugh!

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
I try to hit the gym as often as possible (not always easy during all the travelling) and I hang out with friends and my family.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters?
DJs: take your time to find your own personal music style; learn from others but do not just copy them. Be patient as some things might take a while. And – be ready to work hard. 24 hours. 7 days.

When you play is this pre planned set?
I have a bunch of tracks I always play, e.g. my own tracks and fresh edits I just did. Also I have my own opening track. But apart from that I go with the flow and I adapt my set to the crowd I play to.

What can we expect for the remainder of the year?
Loads of new releases! There is already some collabs in the pipeline (I’ve just been in the studio with Deniz Koyu and I’m working on a track with Otto Knows) and I’m working on my next own single. And of course a lot of touring!

Who are some DJs you think we should keep an eye out for?
There are a few guys that I think will have a big year. I’d watch Dannic, Kryder, Dyro…

What hardware/software do you use & why?
I use an apple macbook pro and I work on Logic. I’ve always been a fan of the sleek apple design and the workflow of Logic. They both go seamlessly together. Logic is very creative and as I’m so used to it I can work very fast.

What are some of your favorite clubs around the world?
There are sooo many! But definitely Watergate and Berghain in Berlin are amongst those!

Who are some of your favorite producers at the moment?
I wouldn’t pick THE one, but I think that at the moment there are quite a few pretty good guys out there! I keep an eye on whatever happens in this scene!

What are some big records that you are playing?
Thomas Gold ft Kaelyn Behr ‘Remember’
Sick Individuals & Axwell ‘I am’
Don Diablo CID ‘Prototype’
Makj & M35 ‘Revolution’
Kill The Noise ‘Mosh It Up’ (Henry Fong Remix)

If you could be any super hero, who would it be?
Iron Man hahaha!
